Once upon a time
long,
long ago, folks were concerned more with safety than comfort;
thus they slept on the cold, hard floors of hidden caves or platforms built high
in the trees. It was only there a tired soul could feel relaxed enough to fall
asleep. However as the Dinosaurs disappeared and man's dominance evolved, people
worried less about security and thought more of their own personal comfort. This
is what led to the innovation of the bed.
|
First
came the plank
"The Plank," man's first attempt at creating a bed, was nothing
more that a wooden platform elevated a few inches off the ground. It did
lift sleepers off the damp floor above most critters that might be crawling
around the sleeping area; however, there was one big problem. This bed came
in only one style - Extra, Extra firm - and so the expression "stiff
as a board" originated about this same time.
|
|
Which
necessitated the straw tick
"The Straw Tick," was man's first creative reaction to the extra,
extra uncomfortable firmness of "The Plank." Although the straw
tick did provide a little cushioning for the body, it had some major disadvantages.
The straw was noisy, itchy, scratchy and smelled like a chicken coop; therefore,
it never fully satisfied all of man's requirements for a great nights sleep.
|
|
Which
was replaced by the feather bed
"The Feather Bed," tried to compensate for what "The Straw
Tick" was lacking
warmth. Nestled in the feather of 100 plucked
birds, it was impossible to be cold; however, the feather bed offered no
support. It was also quite expensive and also smelled like a chicken coop.
Yet again it failed to fully satisfy man's quest for a great night's sleep.
|
|
Until,
at last, the innerspring arrived
"The Innerspring;" a product of 19th century technology, was a
sure sign of progress in the quest for sleeping comfort. The theory Innerspring
comfort went like this
A person reclined on a bag of metal coils causing
some of them to compress and this was called "support." Although
universally accepted, the Innerspring proved to be an uncomfortable compromise,
at best, for many sleepers. However, having a price range to fit most budgets,
requiring virtually no installation, and having little competition, the
Innerspring has retained its popularity to this day. Still eluded by a great
night's sleep, man continued his quest for a better bed.
|
|
Only
to be challenged by the waterbed
"The Waterbed," a 20th century creation offered a totally new
approach to sleep
flotation. The Waterbed offered individualized support
not present in the Innerspring and the Waterbed heater provided therapeutic
warmth. But the Waterbed was never universally accepted - perhaps because
the water is liquid and that just plain scared a lot of folks! Nonetheless,
the even support and reduced pressure points of flotation sleep were duly
noted, and the Waterbed is afloat today.
|
|
And
then came a breakthrough in sleeping comfort - Air
"The Airbed," designed with 21st century technology, offered a
glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps true sleep comfort was
feasible. Airbeds combined the natural, even support of a Waterbed with the
convenience of an Innerspring. Using Space Age technology, man had discovered
the ideal support for a great night's sleep - Air Support.
|
|
Then evolving Space
Age technology led to the development of Memory-Cell®
Advances in research and development seeking methods to keep our Astronauts
safe from the high impact G-forces of lift-off, produced an amazing material.
Memory-Cell combined the pressure relieving support of fluid with
the convenience and simplicity. Mankind had found the answer to the great
sleep puzzle
|
|
Except
mother natures is never outdone - latex becomes the natural choice
Latex creates the natural solution and extracts the best of the rest to
create support and comfort the way Mother Nature intended. No man-made
substance can offer the same purity. However, one question still remained.
Basically there are several good choices, so how can one bed be made that
satisfies ALL the comfort requirements for a great night's sleep
and outshine all the others?
|
|
